From basic to bliss in Surfers Paradise: Ground floor and kitchen renovation

Bright and airy beachside bliss

After wowing homeowner Lynne with a stunning renovation of her first floor Surfers Paradise villa, Renovation Consultant Martin Peirone was once again commissioned to transform a space. This time, Lynne wanted Martin to bring the one-bedroom ground floor unit up to the high standard of upstairs. 

With a complete overhaul in mind, the brief was a contemporary living space, light and fresh with great indoor/outdoor flow to maximise its beachside bliss. With everything from design, build, and interior decorating on the agenda, Martin set about turning the ground floor of this villa into its own little paradise.

Communication is key

After gaining a good understanding of Lynne’s wants and needs, Martin embarked on the concept and feasibility study for this latest renovation. The key to any project running smoothly is communication so, when Lynne’s initial budget of $30,000 was quickly found to be unrealistic, Martin provided clarity and context as to why. With a good amount of wear and tear gathered over the years, fixing the structural state of the building placed the budget around $70,000. The main challenge they faced was a sagging ceiling. On the to-do list was removing the central column to open the space, and engineering a support beam to ensure the ceiling would be structurally sound.

Presented with the working drawings, Lynne understood she’d need to invest to get what she really wanted and the new budget was quickly agreed to. Having gained firsthand experience of Martin’s ability and expertise from her previous project, Lynne trusted Martin every step of the way. Included in the scope of work was installing a new kitchen and bifold doors to the patio, engineering a new robe and bedroom entrance, relocating the unsightly air-conditioning units, laying internal flooring, and painting the whole ground floor. Both Lynne and Martin were excited to get started on what was sure to be an incredible transformation.

Taking It All In stride

While construction was underway, Lynne was able to get on with life while Martin managed his team of engineers, carpenters, electricians, tilers, and painters. Due to her extremely positive experience with Martin and the Refresh process during her previous project, Lynne knew she could trust Martin and his team of experts to do a smooth and professional job.

The only potential challenge during construction was removing the load-bearing post to make the room more functional. But, due to the thorough pre-work Martin put in, replacing the post with a structural beam was taken in stride.

The small sliding doors to the backyard were replaced with large bifold doors, the robe in the bedroom was remodelled to give the bedroom a proper door for privacy, and the new kitchen was installed. With new flooring and a coat of paint throughout the ground floor, the project was completed in just three months.

A Breath of Fresh Air

This incredible makeover has made the old villa completely unrecognisable. Not only does it keep in style with the first-floor renovation, creating a seamless transition from upstairs to down, it also presents a stunning standalone retreat fit for its stylish beachfront surrounds.

The bright, white contemporary kitchen utilises push-to-open cabinetry to give a minimalist feel, enhancing the fresh functionality of the space. Removing the central, load-bearing post has been a gamechanger for liveability, creating a fully-functional, open-plan living area with unencumbered thoroughfare through the sophisticated living room to the bifold doors and outdoors. 

To ensure a cohesive feel, the oak flooring is carried throughout the kitchen, living area, and bedroom, with wood accents used on the stairwell, in the previously-renovated ensuite, and in the kitchen décor. The white ceiling fans and heat pumps allow this functional hardware to blend into the background, preventing visual breaks in the aesthetics and enhancing the bright, light harmony throughout.

Final thoughts on Kitchen Renovation in Gold Coast

You’d be forgiven for thinking this was a new build, with such a thorough transformation. The dim interior with the sad, sagging ceiling has been replaced with an amazingly bright, airy, and spacious ground-floor apartment with great indoor-outdoor flow.
