People's Choice Awards: 2021 Biggest Transformation of the Year

Gold Award: Full home renovation - a Wellington Wonder by Mark Morrison
This 1970s weatherboard home has been tastefully translated into modern design. The bones were all there; the simple coving, hardwood flooring, and open-plan layout. But they’d become lost in the home’s dated fixtures and colour scheme. What this renovation has done is remove all that had aged poorly, rectify subsoil drainage failure and leaking walls, and improve throughout with refurbishments and an extension. The work required was considerably complex, and from it emerged a modern iteration with a sophisticated style. You might consider the kitchen’s makeover, which involved the addition of a scullery, the most exciting aspect of this renovation. Though you’re likely to change your mind after studying the front extension – the carport has become a fully covered garage, which also makes the foundation for a substantial deck that’s framed by a glass balustrade.

Silver Award: Converting a Basement into a Self-contained Apartment in Napier by Sophia Roydhouse-Ross and Mike Ross
The success of this basement conversion proves that anything is possible with the right help. Prior to its renovation, the basement had no plumbing or heating and poor natural lighting. It was simply used for storage. Nicknamed the dungeon, the space had a long way to go before becoming a fully-functioning, warm, and bright home – and that it did. The self-contained apartment features all aspects necessary for comfortable living; a spacious kitchen, contemporary bathroom, complete laundry unit, and a walk-in wardrobe with ample storage room. And if you step outside, you’ll find yourself on the cantilevered deck, which catches the best of the sun.

Bronze Award: Open-Plan Renovation Captures Lakeside Views in the Waikato by Mandy and Lawrie Foster
Situated close to Lake Hakanoa, this 1980s property is positioned to enjoy undisturbed views of the tranquil surroundings. But before its renovation, there was little to see. The home’s original layout restricted sight of the lake and made for dark, cramped interiors. Restructuring the building to create open-plan living was the only way to take full advantage of the location, and that’s precisely what this renovation achieved. The former kitchen, dining room, and lounge have entirely opened up into a modern living area that looks out to the water. Meanwhile, the rest of the home’s interiors have also been refurbished for a fresh look and feel. A cool, neutral colour scheme with a hint of blue perfectly completes this transformation, tying lakeside scenery into the home’s design.
