Living room with timber accents

The winners of this year’s best interior renovation have little in common other than being nominated for best in their category. One has a classic, modern style. Another boasts high-tech gadgets. And then there’s an eclectic century-old bungalow. Each is unique in design and craft – read on to explore.
Gold Award: Full home renovation - a Wellington Wonder by Mark Morrison
The lesser loved qualities of this home’s 70s interior have been removed and refurbished with a modern design, leaving each room with a refined yet comfortable look. As the property already sported a spacious layout with great flow, the concept for this renovation focused closely on spatial use and materials. Warmth was considerably missing from the existing design. And despite there being beautiful hardwood floors in the main living area, the timber’s red tones were muted by the original, cold colour scheme. This issue was tended to by the interior designer who reimagined all rooms with a classic style, warmed in natural colours. While every room has something unique to sing about, the renewed kitchen and its added scullery are most exciting to explore.

Silver Award: Innovative Design for a Smart House in Point Chevalier, Auckland by Dave Georgetti
The interior of this Auckland Central property has transformed from dated to new age after an intensive renovation. Of all changes to be made, improving the functionality was most important; the homeowners wanted to enhance the home’s comfortability with smart technologies to make everyday living easier. However, they also wanted to ensure the home was renovated with premium materials. Thus, high-tech gadgets and high-end finishings can be found in every corner of this home. Most noteworthy is not the Philips Hue smart lighting (though it’s a sight to behold) but the kitchen’s Corian benchtops, which feature a built-in wireless charging surface for all devices.

Bronze Award: An Eclectic Bungalow in Titirangi, Auckland by Dominic Hollands
Renovating a character home is no simple task. There’s almost always a structural problem waiting to be found, and it can be difficult to make tasteful design choices that fit the property’s original style. While this project came with its challenges, the results are exceptional. The master suite’s bathroom and walk-in wardrobe have been renewed to meet the pace of modern living, as has the laundry room. And the kitchen stands revived with an eclectic combination of materials, patterns, and colours, all of which further draw character out from the century-old bungalow.
