Water tanks in Australia

The addition of a water tank to your household not only provides you with fresh, clean rainwater, but it also starts paying for itself the minute it's installed. We discuss everything you need to know about rainwater tanks.

While requiring some forethought, the benefits in the long-run, for both you and the planet, makes the addition of a water tank to your home a worthy pursuit. As there is a wide range of options, there are several factors and pricing differences one should consider as starting points in an endeavour you’ll appreciate for many years to come.

Components

As a water tank, like other water systems, it will become a comprehensive part of your property; its installation and functionality relies on a few extra components. Before making any decisions, it is important that all prospective water tank owners are aware of them.
A pump is required for the installation of the water tank and these are available in three distinct types.

Constant pressure pump

The first, a constant pressure pump, which works by switching on when it detects the use of a tap or toilet.

Pressure vessel pump

There is a vessel on the pump to keep water constantly under pressure, supplying water whenever it’s needed and re-filling when it’s not.

Control switch pump

This option maintains a constant pressure pump, but with the addition of a control switch to revert back to the main water system should the tank run out of water.

Filtration

For filtration of the tank, there are also a variety of options to choose from.
Filtrations systems generally come in the form of cartridges, strainers, or a more comprehensive system (which will come at a higher cost). All are effective, and in the end, it’s going to come down to personal preference and your budget. You need to determine whether you go with a system that costs more, but does not require the same frequency or replacement, or to purchase a cheaper cartridge or strainer that may need to be changed more often. For disinfecting purposes, the only non-chlorine-based disinfectant solution that does not require the boiling of water, is a UV radiation device. This works by deactivating microorganisms through UV irradiations, thereby maintaining the purity of your water supply.

Costs

Rainwater tanks

The cost of your rainwater tank will depend on its capacity, features, strength and whether or not it is an under-deck model. In general, however, an average water tank in Australia starts from $700. A basic option would be a Polyethylene 2000 litre tank or similar. Under-deck tanks are slightly more expensive, with 4000 litre tanks being the most expensive.

Pumps

The price of water tank pumps varies about as much as the tank itself. The simplest models can be as low as $200, but if you’re looking for something with more feature, or power, be aware that they can run up to $1,000.

Installation

For the installation of a water tank, a renovation specialist would manage and take care of organisational aspects of the project. This will ensure that areas that need to be considered as part of the installation are not overlooked. For example, clearing of gutters or laying down a concrete foundation. A renovation specialist will explain what’s involved, what you should reasonably expect, and let you know the pro’s and cons of the installation.

Rebates

Depending on where you live, you may be eligible for a government rebate on a purchase of a water tank. Unfortunately, recent years have seen many of these programs discontinued. However, the Northern territory, Victoria and Western Australia still offer rebates of various types. The Northern territory has a rebate of up to $1900; Victoria up to $1500, and Western Australia (depending on whether or not the tank is connected) gives from $50-$600.

Installation and regulations

Before the installation, there a few final things that your renovation specialist will need to consider. Ensure your tank meets the criteria of applicable regional, national and domestic standards. The conditions that apply to all water tanks in Australia, regardless of location, is that they must be leak proof and sanitary. To install your tank, firstly you’ll need a location. The foundations of your chosen area must be strong enough to hold the water tanks weight when full, so a concrete slab may be required. In the final step, a renovation specialist will be required to make the final connections and setup anything electrical, such as an auto-switching pump.
A rainwater tank is a purchase that’s economical in the long run, and will most likely end up more than paying for itself. That’s why it’s important to make sure that during planning and installation, everything is done correctly according to regulations.
