With the help of Refresh, Barbara was able to transform her ensuite into a contemporary space that is both stylish and spacious
Realising her bathroom was cramped and outdated, Barbara decided it was time for an update. She reached out to her local Refresh renovation specialist, Leigh McDonald, who enlightened her on the best way to create additional space in an ensuite, while showing off a streamlined look: a walk-in Shower!
“Aren’t all showers walk-in?” you might be wondering. Technically, yes—but a walk-in shower specifically is one free of any curtains or doors, nor does it have a curb or tub to step over. You can literally just walk into them.
Barbara had a small ensuite with a tiny enclosed shower, which made the room feel suffocating. The decision to add a walk-in shower would mean a ton of additional space: all the functionality without compromising on style!
Leigh presented Barbara with two options in the concept and feasibility stage. One included a direct walk-in shower, but that would require installing a cavity slider. The other option, which Barbara went with, was to move the vanity to the adjacent wall, allowing her more room for a spacious walk-in shower.
“If you’re thinking of revamping your bathroom with a modern design in mind, a walk-in shower is the way to go,” tells Leigh. Not only does it create more visual space, but simultaneously provides you with a sleek and minimalistic aesthetic.
Leigh’s team started with the tiles, which Barbara chose from Beaumont Tiles, using a 300x600 tile on the floor and the wall. Next, a lustrous Rifco Matisse vanity with a beautiful night sky Caesarstone top was fixed under the window. They also installed a round Thermogroup ablaze mirror with lighting, adding to the modern vogue.
All of the tapware, the vanity, and fittings were supplied by Burdens Bathrooms. Barbara selected the Harmony Nardini taps and decided on a Gracott handheld shower outlet. Leigh’s team installed a glass panel and a niche, which Barbara loves.
When asked about any delays or challenges, Leigh weighs in: “The final cost was marginally over due to a change in the towel rail and an additional plumbing cost—we added a pressure limiting valve to adhere to compliance in Victoria, plus, it protects the warranty of the taps we installed.” He also mentioned how there was a slight delay with the tiler, yet the project only took 22 days to complete. “Delays in trade works can significantly alter timelines on renovations, which is all the more reason to let an experienced specialist manage your project,” concludes Leigh.
Barbara is elated with the final result, “I couldn’t be happier. My ensuite is better than I could have ever hoped for. For what was such a small space initially, it’s really opened it up and it seems so much larger now. I’m very much enjoying my spacious shower!”
