Open plan living in Glendowie

Struggling to find enough space in their small corner-kitchen, this growing Glendowie family reached out to renovation specialist Corey Rambhai in hopes of making some changes. They were interested in finding a solution that would provide them with a more functional and spacious kitchen. Corey led the homeowners through the Refresh process, proposing a small kitchen extension and renovation as the best way forward.

An open-plan design

In the original design, Corey presented his customers with a project estimate of $150,000 and a timeframe of approximately 2.5 months. Corey’s team later discovered structural issues in the roof which needed amending. As a result, the homeowners approved an increase in cost and time so that this could be addressed.     

The open-plan renovation

“The original roof structure was limited in its support and would not comply with today's rules”, explains Corey. “Additional steel and timber structures were added to the roof space in order to fix this. Engineers were involved in the design process and our architect updated the original drawings, which were then submitted to the council for a change in plans.”
From there, the extension was carried out with ease, allowing Corey and his team to move on to installing new flooring as well as creating a new kitchen and living area.

The team installed kitchen benchtops with storage below, providing the family with plenty of preparation space. Additional storage was installed in the form of overhead cupboards. Underneath, soft strip lighting provides increased brightness for countertop tasks and, just below, white tiled splashbacks add a sophisticated traditional aspect to the kitchen. To the right, a built-in floor-to-ceiling pantry and drawers are a great space-saving solution. The fully integrated design hides all kitchen appliances, giving the updated space a clean and open appearance.

Final thoughts

“We particularly like the bifold window in the kitchen, which leads out to an exterior leaner”, adds Corey. “It really brings the outside in and gives the area a sense of space and calm.”  
The new kitchen and living area now perfectly cater to family living. The open plan design allows for socialising and multitasking, while the white paired with wood colour palette creates an elegant yet relaxed atmosphere.
“The final result is amazing, probably one of my favourite projects and outcomes”, states Corey.
