Cailli was no stranger to renovations; nor was she a stranger to Refresh Renovations. In 2020, the renovation of Cailli’s bathroom, expertly managed by Renovation Consultants Jason and Michelle Zielinski, won Bathroom of the Year for its transformation.

Fast forward to 2024 and Jason and Michelle were back at Cailli’s Swan View abode, this time with the task of extending the rear of the property to accommodate a new sunroom and second bathroom.

A Rear Extension

The back patio of Cailli’s home was about as far from being a sunroom as one could get. The home’s red brick walls, flooring, and columns created a dark outdoor space that had, over time, also become a space for plant pots, furniture, extra shelving, and pet crates. There was very little space utilised for outdoor seating, dining, or entertaining.

Furthermore, the connecting toilet and laundry space were pokey and aged. Cailli wanted to connect the third bedroom with a small storage hall outside the bathroom, locate a sunroom where the current landing was and extend it out to the space by the laundry. She also imagined installing awning windows along the length of the sunroom to provide views out to the backyard, rebuild the patio with a skillion roof to allow more light and airflow, and create a storage area underneath.

Given the extensive list of renovations required, Cailli called upon the expertise of Jason and Michelle for a second time.

Design and Build Comes to the Fore

Utilising the Refresh five step process, Jason and Michelle’s work began in the design phase. Having worked with Cailli previously, the trio had a good rapport, particularly when it came to design decisions, materials, and a project budget. Although Cailli had no firm budget set, Jason and Michelle priced the work and then tweaked it to fit in with what Cailli could afford.

The extent of the project also required significant coordination of local trades professionals. This included scheduling concreters and bricklayers, roof carpenters and plumbers, welders, electricians, a tiler and a specialist paver. The latter was required to bring Cailli’s design vision to life - the use of retro tiles.

Creating a Fun, Retro Vibe

The transformation of Cailli’s outdoor space has created a stunning sunroom, filled with light, colour, and clever utilisation of the former overcrowded, underwhelming patio. Gone are the dark red bricks and in their place, windows that connect the inside with the out, fresh white painted panelling, and oversized, geometric shaped concrete tiles. These tiles required the skills of a specialist paver who had to break up the blocks of stone and relay them in a scattered effect, making them a favourite feature of Michelle’s!

The modernised space has also been completed with Cailli’s eye for retro design. A bright orange sofa takes centre stage, while complementary stools with a retro vibe create additional seating and separate dining and relaxation space.

Not only did Michelle and Jason transform Cailli’s outdoor patio space, the neighbouring bathroom was given a new lease of life, continuing the retro vibe. Black and white chequered vinyl creates a fun floor feature, complemented by the retro style standing basin and round wall mirror.

Specialised Finishes

A lot of specialised finishes were required to bring Cailli’s patio and outdoor area to life but Michelle and Jason focused on repurposing old with new to achieve the balance their client wanted. Careful finishes that matched Cailli’s retro-inspired aesthetic didn’t impact too greatly on her budget but ensured a coherent result was achieved in every element of the project.

Michelle is pleased with the result of the second transformation her and Jason have achieved for Cailli:

“The view out to the back yard from the sunroom and patio now makes the space feel expansive. The patio is incredibly light and the crazy paving gives the space great character. All of the finishes that were chosen by the client give her outdoor area a fun, retro vibe that fits in perfectly with her own style.”

Patio perfection was certainly achieved at this Perth property.
